Course objectives
The course is targeted at the Iron Age in Central Europe in a wider cultural-genetic context. The focal point of lectures rests in methodological aspects of study of the Bohemian, Bavarian, Moravian, Austrian, Slovak and Hungarian territory from the 8th century BC to the turn of the eras.
Presentations are partly prepared in English.
Learning outcomes
The students, who will attend the lectures will: - obtain good knowledge of the problem of Central European Iron Age - be able to define and summarize crucial aspects of individual periods of the Iron Age and describe the basic characteristics of archaeological cultures - be able to compare the differences between historical and present interpretations.
Syllabus
  • 1. Spatial and temporal definition, basic terminology. Mediterranean in the 8th-1st century BC. Ethnicity in the Iron Age.
  • 2. Relative and absolute chronology of the Iron Age. Periodisation systems overview. Basic chrono-historical overview.
  • 3. Hallstatt. Hallstatt period, culture and civilisation. Economy of the Hallstatt Period. Lusatian Culture during the Hallstatt Period.
  • 4. Bylany Culture in Central Bohemia. Princely wagon graves. Hallstatt Tumulus Culture in Southwest Bohemia.
  • 5. Horákov Culture in South Moravia. Hlásnica near Horákov. Princely barrows. Relations to the Danube region and Lusatian Culture. Kalenderberg Group in the Middle Danube region. Košariská Group.
  • 6. Late Hallstatt Period. Býčí skála cave. Scythians. Vekerzug Culture. Late Hallstatt "princely" milieu in Rhineland and eastern France, contacts with Mediterranean area (Greek and Etruscan imports).
  • 7. Beginning of the La Tène Period. Early La Tène princely graves. Settlement structure and fortifications. "Historical Celts" in Bohemia and Moravia. "Celtic" expansion.
  • 8. Characteristics and chronology of flat La Tène cemeteries, pre-Dux and Dux-Münsingen horizons. Grave goods and social stratification. Regional differences.
  • 9. Settlement areas. Forms and structure of settlements during the Late Iron Age. Viereckschanze. Production and distribution centres/ agglomerations.
  • Oppida and their emergence, fortification and function. Oppida in Bavaria, Bohemia and Moravia.
  • 10. Carpathian Basin in the 1st century BC - Bratislava and Devín. Decline of La Tène Culture (written sources and archaeological finds). Transition from La Tène to Roman Period. Cultural groups at the periphery of the La Tène Culture - Podmokly and Kobyly Group, Dacians on the territory of Slovakia.
  • 11. Púchov Culture - chronology, settlement structure, contacts. Northwest Slovakia during the La Tène Period. Economy of the Late Iron Age: agriculture.
  • 12. Specialized production during the Iron Age. Technology and innovation. Religious and ritual activities, art. Hoards. Trade and minting.
