Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with the current state of knowledge and the latest research trends in the Neolithic and Eneolithic of Central Europe. The emphasis is put on understanding of important tendencies and connections of this period of Prehistory. The lecture is centred around key topics that will illustrate on case studies the use of the latest theories and methods within natural and social sciences.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- characterize the key issues of contemporary research on the Neolithic and Eneolithic in Central Europe;
- define and summarize main development tendencies;
- describe the basic characteristics of cultural complexes and archaeological cultures;
- use appropriate research method for further investigation of key issues of the Neolithic and Eneolithic.
Syllabus
  • - Introduction and research overview.
  • - Overview of cultural development in the Neolithic and Eneolithic, basic periodisation systems and schemes in Central Europe.
  • - Characteristics of the natural environment in the Neolithic and Eneolithic, relation between man and the environment.
  • - Settlements, fortifications, house, architecture.
  • - Burial rite (burial grounds, graves in settlements, animal burials, social structure).
  • - Spiritual life (features, artefacts and other manifestations of cult and religion).
  • - Systemisation of source material (pottery, chipped and polished stone industry, metals, cultural contacts).
