Course objectives
By the end of the course students should be familiar with the basic European publications, concerning the period from the 8th century BC to the 1st century AD - including the ancient Greek and Roman authors. It is hoped that students will gain a good understanding of the major issues and interpretation models of contemporary archaeology engaged in this period. They will acquire knowledge of chronological systems and important finds dated to the Iron Age. Presentations are in English only.
Learning outcomes
The student should be able to define and analyse the relations between the Mediterranean in Classical Antiquity and the area of Hallstatt and La Tène cultures, as well as the regional specifics in Iron Age Europe.
Syllabus
  • 1. General characteristics of the Iron Age in Europe (social structure, trade, technology). Basic periodization systems of the Iron Age in Europe. 2. Italy and the Alpine regions in the Early Iron Age. Territorial and chronological divisions. Etruscans. 3. The East Hallstatt Circle. Situla art. The social composition of the East-Haltstatt communities. 4. The West-Hallstat Circle. Rich princely burials of the late Hallstatt period. Transalpine contacts with the Mediterranean - the question of "imports". 5. The concept of the emergence and functioning of centralized sites at the interface of the Early and Late Iron Age. Elites. The emergence of the Early Latene culture. 6. The Mediterranean in the 6th-3rd centuries BC. Ancient written sources referring to  "Celts". Celts in Italy,  Greece and Asia Minor.
  • 7. Europe in the late 5th century and 4th century - (Celtic) migration? acculturation? Flat burial sites. 8. Urbanization (and de-urbanization) during the Late La Tene Period. Centres and agglomerations before the oppida. 9. Oppida and society in the Late La Tene Period. 10. The end of the La Tene culture. Romanization. 11. Evidence of cult and art in the Late Iron Age. 12. Conclusion.
