- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to point out critical problems connected with acquisition, processing and interpretation of archaeological data. On the basis of case studies, students will be led to self-evaluation and a realistic attitude to archaeological data. At the end of the course, the students should be able to write a well-considered study based on convincing arguments. The topics concerning the earliest Bronze Age will mostly be used as examples.
- Learning outcomes
- After completion of the course, student will be able to:
- identify critical points in acquisition of archaeological data
- critically evaluate archaeological data before and during their analysis
- critically evaluate professional publications
- write up a well-considered study founded on reasonable arguments. - Syllabus
- 1. Sequence of prehistoric occupation layers in context – research, analysis and interpretation
- 2. Nola + Thera – catastrophes
- 3. Amber + gold – imports, prestigious goods, possibilities of analysis and interpretation
- 4. Miškovice + Mikulovice – possibilities of research into cemeteries
- 5. Bruszczewo, Vráble, Hosty…
- 6. Strontium and oxygen isotopy… - possible applications in research into the earliest Bronze Age
- 7. Tiles – analysis, possible interpretations and methodical comparison with prehistoric finds
- 8. Other topics ad hoc, if possible – (Dermsdorf – House of Men + hoard…)

- Lecture, seminar presentation, group discussion, at-home reading, preparation of a study.
- Assessment methods
- The precondition for a successful completion of the course is the elaboration of a paper (10 standard pages of text + literature, inclusive of references in the text + pictorial supplements) and its presentation (15-minute-speech, at least 15 slides, observing the time limit).
