Course objectives
The practical section is carried out in blocks of 40 hours in the Brno City Archive after the completion of the spring semester teaching period, in accordance with the established academic programme. Introduction - general introduction to the Brno City Archive, its collections and departments
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- practically apply their theoretical knowledge of archival science
- describe the basic functions of an archive from a higher provincial administrative unit
Syllabus
  • Individual daily blocks: 1) Pre-archive care and document service - definition and characterization of the BCA's competencies, forms of document service - electronic and analogue, forms of methodological and regulatory activities, examples of file standards, the process of shredding and the selection of archive materials, the acceptance and storage of archival records;
  • 2) Registering and processing archival records - National Archival Heritage register system, files on collections, basic rules for processing archival records, sorting, organizing, inventory, cataloguing, indexing, types of archiving tools;
  • 3) Use of archival materials - the study of archival records by researchers, rights and obligations of the researcher, services for researchers, research activities, searching in archive funds, communication with authorities and individuals, the archive library and its characteristics;
  • 4) Publishing, editorial and educational activities - types of publications issued by archives, preparing publications, citation principles, cooperation with cultural, scientific, educational and information institutions, conferences, exhibitions, publication and scientific work of archivists;
  • 5) Protection of archival records - conditions and methods for storing archival records, work by conservation and restoration departments, activities in the bookbinding department, the work of the photography department, custom cleaning of archive materials, digitalization of archive materials
