Course objectives
The aim of the course is: to explain relevant grammatical and syntactical elements of classical Latin; to exercise selected Latin grammar; to teach the students how to translate simple Latin sentences into Czech; Students will also be required to have a passive command of selected Latin vocabulary.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to: identify and describe the grammatical and syntactical elements of Classical Latin; apply Latin grammar; translate simple Latin sentences into Czech; Students will also be required to have a passive command of selected Latin vocabulary.
Syllabus
  • Accusative plus infinitive construction; 4th and 5th declension; selected demonstrative, interrogative, negative and relative pronouns; selected pronominal adjectives; relative clauses; comparison of adjectives and adverbs; formulation of comparisons; present and imperfect subjunctive mood of the verbs of 1st – 4th conjugation and the verb esse and its compounds; optative mood; subordinate conjunctions ut and ne; conditional sentences; cum historicum; selected numerals; constructions of local place names; perfect indicative tense of all conjugations.

50% lecture 50% seminar
Assessment methods
Credit requirements : regular class attendance (75%); pass one short written test (the passmark is 65%); final written test (at least 65%); in all of the tests, knowledge of the relevant Classical Latin grammar will be examined by the translation of Latin terms and simple sentences and other grammatical exercises. The use of a dictionary will not be allowed during the test, as a passive command of selected Latin vocabulary is required.
