Course objectives
Are you going to write a seminar paper, a B.A. or M.A. thesis or do you simply need to send a letter and wish to create a written text which would not only be interesting, but also contained no mistakes, and could therefore be evaluated more favourably by recipients? The aim of the seminar is to reinforce the students´ awareness of present-day norms of Standard Czech and complicated issues relating to them. The focus is especially on orthography, but difficult topics relating to morphology and syntax are dealt with as well. Students will learn to use relevant handbooks relating to codification and systematically practising the particular issues, the will gain confidence in written communication and will be able to correct mistakes in Standard Czech also in other speakers´ texts.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able: - to get orientated in present-day codification of Standard Czech; - to use authoritative linguistic handbooks as well as electronic sources when looking up or checking more difficult phenomena; - to apply the acquired knowledge of Czech orthographical norm when writing texts; - to identify, explain and correct mistakes against the rules of Standard Czech, also in texts by other authors.
