Course objectives
Main objectives of the lecture:
- Specification and clarification of the term fantastic literature;
- Mastering the fundamentals of the history and development of fantastic literature in the world and in the Czech context;
- Understanding the position of fantastic literature in Czech culture.
- Introduction to the work of prominent authors.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should:
Be acquainted with categories of fantastic literature;
Be able to identify key points in the development of fantastic literature in the world and in Czech context;
Distinguish modern fantastic literature and its taproot texts
Determine the founding works of fiction;
Interpret fantastic texts in relation to their historical context;
In addition, students will be able to actively complement other relevant fundamental and theoretical literature by receiving an overview of the emerging possibilities of studying fantastic literature.
Syllabus
  • Where does the fantastic literature begin? – fantastic literature and mythology, religion, taproot texts, predecessors of modern fantastic.
  • Utopian and dystopic visions of the world.
  • The birth of science fiction - fascination with open space and growing scepticism.
  • The origins and development of fantasy - the heritage of J. R. R. Tolkien.
  • Women authors and gender in fantastic literature (Ursula Le Guin, C.J. Cherryh and others).
  • Czech fantastic literature in totalitarianism - social criticism and escape from the grey world.
  • Czech fantastic literature - airport novels or something more?
  • Finnish weird - European fantasy a little different.
  • Colonialism and Postcolonialism in fantastic literature (N.K. Jemisin, Octavia Butler, Nnedi Okorafor and others).
  • Fantastics and problems of the contemporary world - environmental criticism and the need for change.
