Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are:
- gaining an understanding of the historical and cultural development of the Czech lands and periodising it;
- clarification of the main characteristics of their cultural development;
- clarification of their present form from a political and cultural point of view;
- explanation of the historical and cultural development in a European context.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course students will:
- be familiar with the history of the Czech lands;
- understand the principles by which the main developmental stages were defined;
- understand the cultural development;
- recognise the specific features of contemporary Czech society;
- be able to characterize the particularities of Czech development and features which it shares with European development.
Syllabus
  • A concise historical-geographic introduction.
  • The Czech lands and their location. Bohemia and Moravia at the dawn of history. Traces of pre-historic cultures, Celts and Germanic peoples. Arrival of Slavs.
  • Beginning of Czech civilization. Great Moravia, Roman Bohemia.
  • Gothic Bohemia of the last Přemyslids and Luxemburgs.
  • The Hussite revolution and its place in Czech history.
  • Renaissance, humanism, Comenius and the Bohemian Brethren.
  • Baroque and its legacy. Changes in the Czech cultural landscape.
  • The national revival and formation of modern Czech culture in the 19th century.
  • The diversity of Czech culture in the First republic.
  • February 1948, Stalinism.
  • The 1960s, the year 1968. Normalisation and Czech culture.

Teaching methods
The seminar will use presentation, interpretation, analysis and comparison of the model of Czech history and culture with a model of the history and culture of students’ countries.
Assessment methods
To obtain a pass students have to pass a test.
