Course objectives
To acquaint the students with various aspects of Roman law (which are subject to change each year), whereby an emphasis is put not only on lectures of alternating scholars but also on reading of legal sources in the original.
The topics are selected every year in such a way that the findings of researchers of the Department of Classical Studies gained in their current work in the frame of grants and research plans are used.
Learning outcomes
A student without previous legal training will
- gain an overview ofimportant institutions of Roman law, Roman legal thought, philosophy of law and the development of Roman law after 476 AD
- be able to characterize those aspects of contemporary law that stem directly from the preserved Roman law, or eventually from Roman systematics, legal philosophy and primary and secondary reception of Roman law
Syllabus
  • Individual runs of the course are dedicated to a specific part of Roman law (subject to change), e. g. family, inheritance, criminal law, law as historical source for studying the imperial absolutism, the estates society of the Dominate, the position of the emperor in the Principate etc. This is how the courses complement the training of the ancient history students. Reading of sources is being adapted to the lectured topic.
