- Course objectives
- The course is one of the four basic introductions into the partial areas of the art history. The aim of the introduction into the history of architectural monuments is to learn the understanding and the explaning of the architectural works through historical eras. The course also includes such topics, as: basic knowledge of terminology, the ability to describe an architectural masterpiece and the designation of the basic ways to process professional text about one architectural work.

- 1. What is Architecture I: The search for its classic definition (M. Vitruvius-Leon B. Alberti-Karl Bötticher-Adolf Loos.
- 2. What is Architecture II: what is relevant of them in the scheme of tne "modern concept of art" (Karl Bötticher-Gottfried Semper-August Schmarsow-Dagobert Frey).
- 3. What is Architecture III: place and moment of form, the basic concepts in architecture.

- 4. The basic concepts I: the function and the task.
- 5. The basic concepts II: the space and the place.
- 6. The basic concepts III: the mass and the form.
- 7. The basic concepts IV: the light, the colour.

- 8. Theoretical writings, solertia - sapere - pratica.
- 9. The model and the drawing design in planning of architecture.
- 10. The „prospect“, the „planum“ and architectural drawing (various functions and methods of implementation).

- 11. The three basic dimensions of analysis I: structural and technical analysis (building analysis and accompanying techniques, standard SHP in Czech Republic).
- 12. The three basic dimensions of analysis II: The Style analysis and the style-historical analysis (analysis of form, style criticism, style - historical approach).
- 13. The three basic dimensions of analysis III: Semantic Analysis (a) the circumstances of the work, b) "Generalia" and elements of architecture, c) From charge to the artistic task).

- 14. The Interpretation of architectural work I: Heuristics and criticism of sources, description and its significance for interpretation.
- 15. The interpretation of a work of architecture II: Structure (external and internal), principles (tectonic and stereotomic), intention of an artwork.
