Course objectives
Basic overview-systematic bachelor's course in the field of modern and contemporary art in the Czech lands, covering the time period from the second half of the 19th Century to the present days.

Students are led through the lectures and their own, individually or group-solved thematic outputs to a complex knowledge grasp of the given topic.

The aim is to build a coherent structural framework that can be followed by students in the follow-up study or their own thematic research and subsequent work with the sources.

Emphasis is placed on overviewing of the subject matter, introduction to the basic milestones of the development of visual arts, architecture and applied art in our environment in the given period.

At the same time, the ability of a sovereign and unambiguous visual identification of distinctive artistic directions and creative positions, their confrontation with the contemporary development of the world art.
Learning outcomes
Students are able to:

- sovereign orientation in the development of painting, sculpture, architecture and applied art from the mid 19th Century to the present days in the Czech environment
- following the course "Art of the Contemporary World: from Courbet to Billy Viola I" and in the development of contemporary foreign art and the contextual interconnection of these knowledge circuits
- fast orientation in traditional and up-to-date literature
- a sovereign contextual classification and a brief characterization of the distinctive stylistic and creative manifestations of the period
- sovereign visual orientation in the work of prominent personalities of the Czech art of the period
- actively handle the terminology related

Teaching methods
Students are introduced to the topics through theoretical lectures and seminar, individually solved themes. Reflected and discussed are always topical issues related to the topic of education - exhibitions, publications, lectures, television programs, artistic criticisms of the outputs in the given area. The percentage attendance of students in lessons, their active participation in the topics discussed, the application of the acquired knowledge is monitored. The output is a separately elaborated comparative topic in the form of a seminar work and a paper, a detailed written and oral examination containing an visual-knowledge test.
Assessment methods
Written and oral exam including an visual-knowledge test.
In the oral part the student analyses a randomly chosen work of art - style characteristics, authorship, time and circumstances of origin.
Preparation of an individual or group report on the given topic or seminar work. Active participation in class discussions and possible joint visits of exhibitions and institutions, monitoring of the current issues in the field are required.
The complexity of grasp of studied subject, orientation in literature and problems, ability to assign a randomly chosen work of art is evaluated.
