- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with the material conditions of painting and drawing.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, a student will be able to:
- identify and summarize important technological innovations of the major periods in the history of painting and drawing;
- identify and describe key artistic techniques of paintings and drawings;
- describe factors which affect paintings' condition and preservation;
- design and explain a suitable method of technological research, conservation and restoration. - Syllabus
- Main themes of the course:
- a) Painter’s books of recipes, ancient theoretical literature.
- b) Kind of support (types of wood panels /panel makers, dendrochronology/, canvas, metal (copper, tin, iron), stone, paper etc.).
- c) Drawing and its history and techniques, preparatory works (drawings and oil sketches), underdrawing.
- d) Gilding, punched decoration.
- e) Pigments and techniques of painting (oil painting, tempera, encaustic, gouache).
- f) Techniques of wall painting (fresco, fresco secco, sgraffito).
- g) Condition and preservation of paintings and its technological research.
- h) Methods of conservation and restoration, survey of the history of restoration.
