Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the history of European painting, especially in the early modern period, is presupposed.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
We all know them, but do we know what they actually depict? Masterpieces of European Renaissance and Baroque painting such as Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl or Michelangelo's Last Judgement need no long introduction, the theme is obvios. Isn't it? What was the function of these paintings? In what context were they created? What exactly are they depicting? What did they mean in their time and how were they perceived by their contemporaries? And what was their later reception? In this seminar, we will attempt to understand as deeply as possible the content and function of the leading works of European painting of the 15/16th-18th centuries.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course student should be able to:
Describe and explain the iconographic themes of the artworks discussed in a contemporary context
Show a solid orientation in the relevant sources and literature and critically evaluate them
Reflect the methodological aspect of previous interpretations of the artworks under discussion
Provide and describe results of his study in the coherent presentation.
Syllabus
  • Chosen paintings of the Renaissance and Baroque, e.g.:
  • Sandro Botticelli, mythological paintings of the 1580s (Primavera, Birth of Venus, Venus and Mars); Michelangelo, The Last Judgement (Sistine Chapel, Vatican City); Titian, Apollo and Marsyas (archbishop's chateau in Kroměříž); Vermeer, Girl with a Pearl (Mauritzhuis, The Hague); Andrea Pozzo, The Glory of St. Ignatius (S. Ignazio, Rome); Tiepolo, The Four Continents (bishop's residence in Würzburg); Velázquez, Las Meninas (Prado, Madrid)
Teaching methods
analysis of the iconography of paintings, reading and class discussion, preparation of a PowerPoint presentation and its presentation in class
