Course objectives
The mission of the subject “Systematics in Folk Culture” is to make the ethnology students familiar with the structure of traditional folk cultural of the Czech ethnic group in relation to the Central-European cultural area.
Learning outcomes
After having finished the course, the students will be able to understand different historical attempts to classify the phenomena of traditional folk culture. They will be able to identify particular cultural forms of tangible, social and spiritual culture, meaning the systematics based on the work by the Polish ethnographer K. Moszyński and his followers. In last years, the systematics of traditional culture following the UNESCO projects works with terms “tangible and intangible cultural heritage”, which create new structure which the course will be concluded with.
Syllabus
  • 1. Explanation of basic terms (systematics, typology, researchers among ethnographers, folklorists and bibliographers).
  • 2. Tangible culture and its traditional forms (occupation and sources of livelihood, traditional diet, folk dress, seat and house, transport, trading).
  • 3. Social culture related to family life and folk collectiveness (transitional rituals, annual and farm customs, ceremonies and habits, religious and profane folk festivals).
  • 4. Spiritual culture and its expressions (folk and official faith, magic visions, folk knowing, natural healing, artistic forms related to ceremonies, religion and farming year).
  • 5. Modernization of the life in the 20th century and its cultural and social consequences (disappearing of traditional culture´s phenomena, folklorism, new forms of social life).
  • 6. Tangible and intangible cultural heritage as a globalized and innovated form for the presentation of traditional folk culture´s phenomena.
