Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the issue of experimental ethnography. The principles and starting points of experiments in the field of traditional production technologies will be presented. The subject will be focused on such experiments, which can serve mainly for the needs of ethnological interpretations. Basic approaches to the implementation of experiments will be defined, which, based on empirical observation, can confirm or refute certain knowledge or establish new hypotheses in the field of knowledge of traditional technologies that were part of traditional folk culture. Students will be introduced to the historical development of experimental ethnography as well as current methods, including concrete examples of implementation.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will gain a basic overview of the initial approaches, possibilities, but also the interpretation risks of experimental ethnography. They will learn to understand different applications of laboratory-type research through active verification through experiment. They will also be able to define and evaluate the possibilities and usability of experiments in ethnological interpretations in the field of traditional technologies.
