- Course objectives
- Second seminar from the cycle of four seminars dedicated to the gradual preparation of the Master´s thesis. The aim of the course is to elaborate the first part of the work which usually means a theoretical-methodological and / or historical introduction and / or one model chapter.
Within the framework of the Master´s Seminar II, the student is also required to write an academic review essay on a specialized monograph which is methodologically related to the topic of their work and represents the current state of research in the given field. The selection of the reviewed work and the method of realization are being consulted with the supervisor. In the case of a monograph published in a foreign language, the review is written in Czech or Slovak language, while in the case of monographs published in Czech or Slovak language, the review is written in English, unless the supervisor specifies otherwise. A review of five to ten standard pages (1 page = 1,800 characters) will contain the following basic components: a) an initial brief characterization of the position of the book and its author the field; b) a summary of the conclusions, objectives, hypotheses and main arguments of the book as well as description of its structure; c) capturing positives and substantive controversy with problematic points in specific professional contexts; d) a final assessment of the extent and quality of fulfillment of the initial objectives of the monograph. A review of the foreign publication places the book to the Czech context, while a review of the Czech and Slovak publications assumes readers from the international academic public. The review refers to the original edition, the quality assessment of any translation into another language is not obligatory. Desirable, though not required, is the subsequent publication of a review in Czech, Slovak or foreign periodicals. - Learning outcomes
