Course objectives
In view of the heterogeneous nature of the first year students’ level of French upon starting their studies, this French language course is primarily conceived as a remediation course, aiming to strengthen and deepen existing language skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking; spoken and written mediation and interaction) in accordance with the B1 level of the CEFR. At the same time it also aims to substantially enrich lexical knowledge and to provide insight in grammatical structures in a systematic and explicit way, in preparation of future linguistics courses. Grammatical and lexical structures are drilled in various communicative situations, and special attention will be given to the command of basic written forms. Pronunciation and prosody will be corrected where necessary. Emphasis is also placed on the development and training of independent and interactive learning skills and strategies.
Learning outcomes
Output level of language according to CEFR: B1. At the end of this course, students should be able to: understand short written texts of various types; understand short audio and audiovisual materials in standard spoken French; correctly use and analyze basic grammatical structures; interact with a certain degree of spontaneity in daily situations; write short narrative or descriptive texts; talk with relative fluency about subjects directly related to their daily life and environment. They should also be able to study grammar and vocabulary in an efficient, autonomous manner and to make intelligent and critical use of automatized language tools.
