Course objectives
To acquiant the students of combined studies with the basic forms of the state, society and with the cultural achievements of the Ancient Period. Show developmental processes, leading from the ancestral establishment to the state and from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Show the still living heritage of the Ancient Period.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to characterize the main types of ancient state; he/she will be able to characterize the differences and analogies between ancient and contemporary though; to judge the signifikance of ancient culture and science for the further development of humanity.
Syllabus
  • 1)Type of state in Mesopotamia and Egypt; society of the Ancient Oriental type
  • 2) The society, religion and culture of Mesopotamia
  • 3) Egypt – society, religion and culture
  • 4) Beginnings of Antiqity in Europe, connection to the development of Antiquity in the Near East
  • 5) Beginnings of Antiquity, the ancient state and political system; civil society
  • 6) Crises of the poleis; Hellenism and the development of science, technology and art in that period
  • 7) The issue of the emergence of Rome; evaluation of the political establishment and society at the time of the Roman Republic
  • 8) The differences between the Principate and Dominate
  • 9) The internal crisis of the Roman Empire and foreign dangers as a factor of the end of the empire in the West
