- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to analyse and interpret more than fifty years of political and public activity of Gustáv Husák in the context of modern history of Slovakia and Czechoslovakia. Through a biographical profile of this personality, the lecture aims to contribute to a closer understanding of selected problems of (Czech)Slovak history in the years 1918-1989, with an emphasis on the development of the communist movement in Slovakia and the issue of Czech-Slovak relations.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
classify the personality of G. Husák in the context of Slovak and Czechoslovak history; describe the development of Czech-Slovak relations; describe the development of the Slovak communist movement, describe the course and causes of political processes in Slovakia; define the concept of bourgeois nationalism; characterize the Slovak national emancipation movement of the 1960s. - Syllabus
- The lecture presents the political and public activities of Gustáv Husák from the 1930s to the 1980s. It focuses particularly on the 1960s, when Husák slowly returned to political life after his release from prison, and the subsequent period of normalisation, when he held the office of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and later President of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. The course will present not only Husák's multifaceted political and journalistic activities, but also a psychological portrait of this controversial personality. Husák's fate will be set in the context of selected problems of Slovak and Czechoslovak history in the years 1918-1989 (the vicissitudes of Czech-Slovak relations, the development of the Slovak communist movement, Slovak Marxist intellectuals and their role in the politics of the Communist Party of the Czechoslovak Republic, anti-fascist resistance in Slovakia, the issue of so-called Slovak bourgeois nationalism and related political processes, the Slovak national emancipation movement of the 1960s, etc.).
