- Course objectives
- After finishing this course, students will have an understanding of the causes and events behind the extraordinary construction of the city of Novgorod and its significance in the history of the whole of Eastern Europe. They will grasp the differences in the legal and social construction of cities in eastern and western Europe. They will understand the specific influence of the Orthodox Church on the political and cultural growth of a city in East Europe, including the establishment of town brotherhoods and their activities in the 16th and 17th centuries. They will develop arguments to perceive the differences in the development of Western and Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age.
