Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to acquaint students with the art of symbolism, with its predecessors and followers, with the specific thinking, with its penetration into music and its legacy for the music of the 20th century and today.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to recognize the manifestations of symbolism in art, especially in music.
Syllabus
  • 1 Introduction to the epoch of symbolism - specifics of the period, its roots and end, selected ways of symbolizing in music throughout history 2 French and Belgian Symbolism, Impressionists 3 analyzes of Satie's Danses Gothiques, Pieces Froides, Sports et divertissements and Socrates as a demonstration of the metamorphosis of the aesthetics of Symbolism into Neoclassicism 4 Anglo-American Symbolism - from the Pre-Raphaelists to Ives 5 German symbolism and the Tristan generation 6 symbolism in northeastern Europe – Szymanowski, Sibelius, Čiurlionis 7 Russian Symbolism and Akmeism. Scriabin and his eclectics, Rebikov. Gurjayev's and Komitas's music as an instinctive musical expression of a symbolist creator. 8 musical analyzes of Scriabin's late piano works and Rebikov's works as a demonstration of the metamorphosis of the aesthetics of Symbolism into Expressionism 9 Symbolist influences and tendencies in the Czech Republic – Cecilianism, Wagnerianism, Suk, Novák, Vycpálek, Ostrčil, Symbolist aesthetics in the works of Janáček (Amarus, Elegy on the death of Olga's daughter – musical analyses)

Teaching methods
Teaching methods are musical analysis, comparison of works of art across art forms. Specific phenomena such as synaesthesia or the relationship between music and text/art work are performed with the help of projections in addition to analyses.
