- Course objectives
- Student learns basic patterns of modern Japanese Language’s grammatical structure, its vocabulary and phraseology; in coordination with the courses of the Japanese writing system the student also acquires the capacity to interpret basic Japanese texts; he/she is able to use actively the grammar with respect to sociopragmatic factors of the Japanese communication.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing this course the student is able to:
- apply correct pronunciation to expressions in standard Japanese
- make a self-introduction in Japanese
- count in Japanese
- conduct a basic interaction while using basic phraseology
- use basic lexical means in sentence construction
- form basic morphological constructions
- build basic sentence structures and use them in appropriate situation
- read and interpret elementary texts in Japanese - Syllabus
- 1. Introductory lesson, requirements of the course, basic characteristics of the Japanese language
- 2. Phonological structure of modern Japanese
- 3. Lesson # 1: Immediate nominal predication, question constructions, topos and thematic construction, nominal attribute
- 4. Lesson # 2: Negative nominal predication, inclusive focal construction, interactional particles, immediate adjectival predication, demonstratives
- 5. Lesson # 3: Adjectival modificators, existential predication, grammatical categories of static predications
- 6. Lesson # 3: Contrastive focusing of rheme, constructions with topos and nominative
- 7. Lesson # 4: Embedded proposition, verbal forms and verbal constructions
- 8. Lesson # 4: Modification and complements of verbal predications, parallel enumeration of nominals
- 9. Lesson # 5: Secondary complements, joint forms of predicatives
- 10. Lesson # 5: Causal-explicative joining of clauses, constructions of a subjective desiderative

- Teaching methods
- Lecture according to the study materials, with focus on basic syntactic structures and sociopragmatic specifics of the Japanese language. Students also get acquainted with the basic terms of the Japanese linguistics. Additional explanation based on the results of short test is offered on-line form.
- Assessment methods
- Written test. Results of short tests during the course are also part of the assessment. Active attendance of at least 70 % of the classes is required.
