Course objectives
Basic geographic, political, social and economic characteristics of the Republic of Slovenia. The course introduces Slovenian life and institutions as well as to the political development and cultural specifics of the country. Students will be able to explain, analyze and compare situation and specifics of the Republic of Slovenia. This course is suitable for all students that would like to understand today´s Slovenia - either for purposes of future employment or before a study stay in this country.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
- summarize the main geographic, economic, political and cultural features of contemporary Slovenia,
- apply knowledge of Slovene life and institutions and regional specifics during the stay in the Slovene language environment,
- compare selected aspects of contemporary Slovenia with the situation in the Czech Republic.

  • 1. Introduction to Slovene studies, regions of Slovenia, milestones of Slovene history.
  • 2. Physical geography of Slovenia.
  • 3. Human geography of Slovenia.
  • 4. Politics of Slovenia & Foreign relations of Slovenia.
  • 5. Ljubljana: capital city and its surroundings.
  • 6. The Alpine region: complex introduction of this micro-region and its specifics.
  • 7. The Dinaric-Karst region: complex introduction of this micro-region and its specifics.
  • 8. The Mediterranean region: complex introduction of this micro-region and its specifics.
  • 9. The Pannonian region: complex introduction of this micro-region and its specifics.
  • 10. Autochthonous Slovene minorities in Italy, Austria and Hungary.
  • 11. Contemporary Slovene culture and art (film, music, fine art).

Teaching methods
Lectures are accompanied by short students´ presentations (introducing interesting locality, personality, work or phenomenon), class discussion.
Assessment methods
Attendance (max. 10 points), final written test (max. 40 points) that will examine orientation in the discussed topics (10–15 short questions and 2 open questions). Students also need to hold a compulsory presentation (max. 10 points, using PowerPoint) - written texts will not be accepted. Grading scale: A 100–90 %, B 89–85 %, C 84–75 %, D 74–70 %, E 69–60 %, F 59–0 %.
