Course objectives
There are a number of border areas in south-eastern Europe that have a varied history and have belonged to different state formations. Shifting borders do not only mean political changes, but also always linguistic changes, which the local population is confronted with. In this seminar we will look at four examples, namely Vojvodina (Serbia), Banat (Romania, Serbia, Hungary), Thrace (Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey) and Bessarabia (Moldova, Ukraine). All these regions are characterised not only by changing nationalities but also by a very heterogeneous ethnic and linguistic constellation. For example, in Vojvodina, among others, Slovak is spoken, while in Banat a special variant of Bulgarian written in Latin is used. The linguistic diversity of the different regions and the typological classification of the numerous minority languages will be presented. The historical and contemporary impact of language policy in these territories will also be discussed, and the phenomena of language contact and language change will be illuminated (against the background of actual and concrete examples).
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to describe and interpret the linguistic issues of the analyzed places in Southeastern Europe with respect to both the historical events that contributed to the current state of affairs and the current dynamics of their linguistic development.
