Course objectives
This course presents a basic geographic, political, social and economic characteristic of the Balkan Peninsula and the countries in Southeastern Europe (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo and Greece). On successful completion of the course student will acquire necessary knowledge and arguing skills on the ethnic and linguistic structure of the population, life and institutions of these countries as well as their cultural specifics. In this way he acquires a complex overview of the whole Southeastern Europe.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of modern history of Balkan countries, have a broader and more solid understanding of key aspects of social life in the Balkan countries.

  • - Geographic, administrative and political characteristics of Balkans, introducing the terminology, Balkan peninsula, South-Eastern Europe, language map of the Balkans.
  • - Historic and cultural characteristic of Balkans, nations and ethnic groups in Balkans, religious map of the Balkans.

Teaching methods
Lectures, home reading, class discussion.
Assessment methods
The course consists of thematically autonomous lectures of several scholars specialized in the Balkans. Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance and solid home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion. There is going to be a final electronic test, which concentrates on the student’s knowledge of the studied countries as well as the Balkans as a historically and culturally distinct region of Europe.
