- General goals: Students will remember important events (not only) in Czech history and expand and deepen their existing knowledge. They will get a comprehensive idea of Christianity in Great Moravia and what was its role in society at that time. Within the course, attention is focused on the role of language and writing in society, namely in the society of that time with reflection on its role in today's society. Based on the topics discussed in the course, students will take away clear information about the activities of the Thessaloniki brothers, the importance of studying Old Slavic and why we still return to the topic of the activities of Constantine and Methodius today. Specific objectives: Description of historical events connected with Great Moravia, including the language situation. Explanation of the causes of the emergence of the Slavic liturgy. Reproduction of the most important facts about the life and activities of the Thessalonica brothers. Description of the relationship of Old Slavonic to contemporary Slavic languages. Explanation of the reasons for the study of Old Slavic in order to understand the functioning of contemporary Slavic languages. Argumentation and evaluation of the facts concerning the Cyril Methodius mission. Interpretation of the advantages and disadvantages of knowledge of cultural-historical contexts for understanding the activity of the Thessaloniki brothers. Argumenting the pros and cons of studying Old Slavic for understanding contemporary Slavic languages.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to: - interpret the most important historical facts about Great Moravia - explain the cultural-historical context of the activities of Constantine and Methodius - explain the influence of Old Slavic on contemporary Slavic languages - analyze short Old Slavic texts - argue the acquired knowledge within the course - discuss the advantages and disadvantages of studying Old Slavonic for students of Slavic disciplines today
