Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are: culture of pharaonic Egypt and overiew of principal cultures of Mesopotamia and Anatolia, Achaemenian Persia.
- acquaintance with the works of art and archaeological material
- the specifics on the individual cultural periods and their mutual connections and influence on the formation of Greek creative arts.
The aim of this introductory course is the make the student acquainted with the knowledge of specific characteristics and the stylistic evolution of these cultures. They should be able to understand and interpret the main cultures and their archaeological evidence.
Syllabus
  • This lecture will describe the development of the most important cultures of the Ancient Near East and Egypt:
  • neolithic Anatolia
  • Mesopotamia: El Ubaid and Djemdetnasr period, Sumerian civilization, Akkadian, Neobabylonian period and Assyrian culture.
  • Hittite civilisation, Syria, Persia,
  • Egypt: Early cultures, Old, Middle and New kingdoms, Late period and contacts of the late Egyptian art and Greeks.
  • The lecture will also practise how to distinguish styles of the different cultures and periods.

Fullfilment: Requirements for the examination: - Basic orientation in the individual spheres of research in the branch - Knowledge of specialised literature, journals and outcomes of the work of significant researchers within the scope of the lecture and the assigned literature - Adequate participation in the work of the seminar - final test anticipates an oral exam
