- Knowledge of phonetics and phonology. It is highly recommend that the students pass some course on phonetics and phonology.

- Course objectives
- The course wants to introduce students to phonotactics as a phonological area which deals with rules of phoneme distribution and combinations and which could therefore be regarded as "phonological syntax". The course will present its basic principles and problems it has to deal with.
- Learning outcomes
- After passing the course the students will be able
- to understand the principles of phonotactics
- to critically evaluate various analytical methods
- to apply them to concrete problems
- to work up their own phonotactic description of a particular language - Syllabus
- 1) Phonotactics and its position within phonology
2) Distributional unit, syllable and other domains of phonotactic description
3) Phoneme distribution, defective distribution, neutralization
4) Nuclear phonemes and their identification, phonotactic function
5) Phoneme combinations and rules limiting them
6) Syllabification
7) Application to Czech
