Course objectives
Students will be informed about the character and function of the Latin language in the Middle Ages and about specific features of the medieval Latin literature, including formal characteristics of poetry and prose. They will become acquainted with basic genres of medieval Latin literature and about the most important periods, authors and treatises of both European and Czech Latin literature of early and high Middle Ages. Special emphasis is put on the so-called medieval renaissance periods and their differences in comparison with the so-called European renaissance.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course studentis will be able todescribe basic language features of Medieval Latin and its differences from the classical norm, including the formal characteristics. They will be able to fully understand the relation and continuity between Ancient (Latin) and Medieval literary cultures in a wider cultural and historical context. They will grasp the essence and the significance of medieval literary returns to Classical Antiquity and will be able to describe the "map of literary genres" of medieval Latin literature.
Syllabus
  • Specific features of medieval Latin as a language phenomenon (morphology, syntax, vocabulary). Formal features of medieval Latin poetry and prose.
  • Periodization of medieval Latin literature, its specifics and the most important genres.
  • Basic literary tools and electronic resources for studying medieval Latin.
  • Bible.
  • Importance of the patristics for the development of medieval literature, influence of St. Augustine.
  • Early Middle Ages (Benedictine monasteries, Isidor of Sevilla, Bede the Venerable).
  • The so-called Carolingian Renaissance, its most importance representatives (Alcuin of York, Theodulf of Orleáns, Einhard).
  • The so-called Ottonian Renaissance and its most importance representatives (Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim, Gerbert of Aurillac, Luitprand of Cremona, Waltharius).
  • The so-called Renaissance of the 12th century and its comparison with previous medieval renaissance periods (Carmina Burana, Walter of Chatillon, Peter Alphonsi, Otto of Freising, Hildegard of Bingen, Peter Abelard etc.).

Teaching methods
Lectures, seminar discussions, presentation of a selected literary treatise.
Assessment methods
Regular and active class participation. Written test aimed at testing student's insight into the topics discussed during lectures.
