- Course objectives
- The main aims of the course is to introduce Virgil's and Ovidius' texts, as well as the temporal, cultural and literary context, literary models and the subsequent tradition of the texts.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students:
- are able to read and translate particular parts of Vergil's and Ovidius' text;
- are capable to provide the metrical analysis;
- can also interpret the works of both authors in literary context, including the models and further tradition of the works. - Syllabus

- 2.-9. Virgil, Bucolics I, IV;
- 10.-11. Virgil, Aeneid I;
- 12. -13. Ovidius, Metamorphoses (Four ages, Pyramus and Thisbe).

- Teaching methods
- The course includes practice with focus on correct translation and interpretation of the Latin original poetic texts into Czech language. Active attendance and participation 75% is required. Regular weekly work at home consisting of translation from Latin to Czech is expected. Special attention will be paid to the use of modern commentaries and to the knowledge of Ancient mythology and reality.
- Assessment methods
- At the end of the course, written and oral final examination: analysis of the metre of a selected poem and its adequate translation from Latin. Active participation at the classes and homework are also expected. Minimum pass level of the written examination: 75%.
