Course objectives
The course provides students with an insight into the development of the Arabic world, describes its society and the institutions of the Caliphate in East and West, and deals with the old Arabic religion and the early history of Islam.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will:
- be able to explain the oldest development of the Arabic world and the ways in which it was influenced by other states of ancient Middle East, Hellenization, Romanization, as well as Christianization of the Arabs.
- be acquainted with the pre-Islamic Arabic deities and be able to independently assess the complicated roots of the Arabic and later Muslim civilization, as well as to compare these to the European Christian civilization.
- recognize the close bonds of the Arabic world to other ancient civilizations and see it in the context of the whole ancient history .
- be able to describe the main ideological movements forming the early Islam and its basic ethical and social values.
Syllabus
  • 1) The nature of the Arabian peninsula. Sources referring to the Arabic history.
  • 2) The earliest kingdoms in the southern Arabia, especially Saba and Ma'in, their government, society, and economy.
  • 3) The Arabic tribes as described in the Assyrian and Egyptian sources as well as in Bible.
  • 4) The oldest known pantheon of Arabic deities.
  • 5) The Arabs as reported by ancient authors (from historian Herodotus onwards).
  • 6) The Nabataean Kingdom, its Hellenization and Romanization.
  • 7) Romanization and Christianization of Arabs in the provinces of Eastern Roman Empire.
  • 8) Arabs as Roman foederati, their role in Roman administration and army.
  • 9) The Ghassanids and the Lakhmids as the allies of Roman and Persian Empires.
  • 10) The oldest Arabic poetry, tribal morals and life in the Hejaz before the rise of Islam.
  • 11) Muhammmad, his life and activities. The foundation of Muslim Ummah.
  • 12) The relationships of the oldest Muslims to Jews, Christians, and “pagans”.
