- Course objectives
- The main objective of the course is to provide basic information about the proto-historical and historical development of Latin in the Indo-European context and in relationship to the Italic languages of ancient Italy. At the end of the course the student will be familiar with various language changes, as attested by literary and epigraphic sources.b Further will be able to demonstrate, explain and comment the main archaic features on epigraphical material from the latin archaic period and to aply their knowledge in transcription of these text into classical Latin.

- 1.-2. System of IE vowels and diphtongs on the way to Latin. 3. IE ablaut and its impact on Latin; laryngal theory. 4.-5. Latin vowels and diphtongs in the course of the historical development in Antiquity 6. Historical weakening of vowels and diphtongs in unstressed syllables. Changes in the quantity. 7.-8. System of IE plosives on the way to Latin. 9. Late Latin assibilation and palatalisation. 10.Rotacism - other selected consonant changes. 11. Nominal categories: declension types. 12. Nouns and adjectives of the 1st declension.

- Teaching methods
- The course includes lectures and practice (reading archaic latin texts in orfiginal writig characters)with focus on diachronic analysis of archaic test. Regular work at home is expected.Five written tests.
- Assessment methods
- The course is taught as both lectures and seminars. To obtain the credits active participation in the classes is expected. 5 written smaller tests and one final test.minimum pass level 75 %.

The course is taught once in two years.
Information on course enrolment limitations: Předmět je určen studentům magisterského cyklu, ve výjimečných případadech jej lze po dohodě s vyučujícím zapsat semestr před složením státní bakalářské zkoušky.
