Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce practical principles of textual criticism with special regards to medieval manuscript material of Bohemian origin. It will familiarise students with the most important methodological approaches of traditional and modern textual criticism with regards to medieval Latin, Czech and German material.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- describe the most important approaches of textual criticism to medieval manuscript material
- understand the differences and specifics of medieval primary sources written in various languages with regards to their critical editions
- explain differences in editing various types of historical texts
- apply the most appropriate method of modern textual criticism to historical unedited sources
Syllabus
  • Traditional textual criticism versus textology (Lachmann, Maas, Bédier, Lichačev); New Philology; Digital Turn
  • Medieval manuscript material and its specific features: the concept of authorial intention, mouvance, variance, contamination of manuscripts, specific features of Latin manuscripts
  • Specific features and traditions of editing old Czech texts: a) Old Czech and Early Modern Czech texts; b) printed and manuscript texts
  • Various traditions of book culture in the manuscript and print culture. Relationship between the development of typography and ortography. Editing texts with long text tradition.
  • Specific philological traditions in editing medieval German texts; the problem of linguistic standardisation - concept of the so-called classical Middle High German

Teaching methods
Seminars and seminar discussions; conscientious reading of assigned secondary literature; presentation of a research question based on a textual source of one's own choice.
Assessment methods
Colloquy. Deadline for the written assignement: 31. 1. 2024, followed by an oral discussion (date to be assigned individually).
