- In this course the ecological crisis, in particular the present and future effects of global warming, will be understood from a humanities perspective. We will explore some of the interrelations between natural science and the humanities through analysis of aesthetic representations of scientific facts and arguments and a main objective is to provide a first understanding of the ecological crisis as it is being represented in a number of aesthetic forms, but also in a science report and a popular communication home page. Theoretically, the course combines two theories from the humanities: ecocriticism on the one hand and intermedial studies on the other. Ecocriticism investigates humankind’s interaction with nature as this is represented in literature (and, more recently, in other arts and media). Intermedial studies are interested in how different art forms and media combine with each other, and how content can be transferred from one media type to another: Unique for this course, and for the notion of intermedial ecocriticism, is the attempt to combine two fields that are normally not combined in order to confront an urgent societal challenge.
The course, which is a condensed version of a MA-course developed at Linnæeus University with Niklas Salmose, is based upon five very general theses:
1. The humanities is essential in order to understand and solve the crises in the Anthropocene,
2. Classic dichotomies such as nature/culture need to be deconstructed,
3. The aesthetics have serious and deep potentials for communication of knowledge,
4. In order to viably analyze communication knowledge of media studies and intermediality is necessary,
5. Climate crisis is both a local and global affair. - Osnova
- The course is constituted by three closely connected lessons. While the teacher will do some lecturing based on a structured theoretical framework and case studies, the aim of the lessons is to promote discussions concerning fundamental issues of the intermedial communicative issues related to representing the climate-ecological crisis. The students are thus expected to actively engage in the lessons by way of asking questions and taking part of debates emerging in relation to the literature and the presentations.
- The titles of the seminars have the following titles:
- 1. Intermediality … Ecocriticism … An Introduction;
- 2. Intermedial Ecocriticism confronting science-related material (The IPCC-report and Squarzoni, Climate Changed);
- 3. a/ Future Food Cultures (Blade Runner 2049 – the EAT Lancet campaign – b/ general remarks, future perspectives
