Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
reproduce nominal and verbal paradigms studied within the course (vide syllabus of the course);
explain grammatical rules studied within the course;
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
translate easy Latin texts using a dictionary;
explain the functions of selected syntactic structures;
use synonymous expressive means to express selected grammatical phenomena;
demonstrate the relations of selected Latin word roots to the vocabulary of the Romance languages and loan words in Czech.
Syllabus
  • 1. Comparison of adjectives and adverbs.
  • 2. Present and imperfect subjunctive of all conjugations and the verb esse. Their use in simple sentences.
  • 3. Use of present and imperfect conjunctive in complex sentence (final clauses, cum historicum).
  • 4. Perfect indicative (active and pasive).
  • 5. Perfect infinitive (active and pasive).
  • 6. Ablative absolute.
  • 7. Revision. TEST.
  • 8. Other indicatives formed from the perfect stem (plusquamperfect and exact future).
  • 9. Subordinated indicative clauses expressing anteriority.
  • 10. Future participles and supine.
  • 11. Future infinitives. Direct questions.
  • 12. Revision.
  • Final test.

Teaching methods
Lectures, practice (translating, grammar exercises). Regular class attendance and homework are required.
Assessment methods
Active participation in the class (min. 75% attendance) and regular preparation of grammar and translation assignments are the essential requirements for obtaining the credit. The grade is determined based on the performance in a final written test where students’ mastery of basic grammar is tested through a translation of a short self-contained Latin passage (dictionaries allowed).
