Course objectives

The seminar deals with texts and trends in contemporary Austrian literature. From newcomers like Angela Lehner to established authors like Friederike Mayröcker, works from Austria from (with one exception) the last five years will be critically examined. Based on close readings of excerpts from the respective works, thematic and motivational as well as literary-theoretical aspects will be discussed. In addition, further questions will be discussed in context: Why and how do we still talk about national literature today? How does literary criticism and canonisation work? How do politics and (contemporary) literature relate to each other?

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will have:
- an outstanding understanding of the current Austrian literary landscape as well as an overview of historical and sociological contexts of the Austrian literary scene.
- trained and improved their text-analytical skills.
- not only expanded their knowledge of literary theory, but also used it intensively in practice
- learnt about literary terms, theories and language and applied them themselves
- developed and applied independent approaches to the interpretation of literary texts
- developed their linguistic skills (technical language)

Teaching methods

The students should be familiar with texts of the latest Austrian contemporary literature and train their own ability to analyse, the following steps serve this purpose:
- Independent, question-led (home) reading of the texts and the preparatory materials.
- Discussion and comparison of the individual home reading in the seminar within small groups.
- Discussion of the developed answers in the plenary and further questions on the text
- Additional input and discussion suggestions from the teachers
