- Course objectives
- In this course, students become acquainted with Belgium and the Dutch-speaking part (Flanders) in particular. By means of various themes, which are explored in depth and placed in a historical perspective, they acquire basic knowledge about Belgian history and society and gain insight into current discussions.
- Learning outcomes
- Students have insight into the state structure, politics and language situation of Belgium.They know important historical and contemporary figures and historical developments prior to and after the birth of Belgium. They are aware of current discussions and can interpret them (historically).

- Teaching methods
- A combination of lecture and seminar (two hours per week); within the class a combination of teacher-led activities and student-centered learning activities, such as discussions about current topics and small presentations about political parties and a topic from the Flemish Canon.
- Assessment methods
- Attendance is required (max. 2 absences). In preparation for the lectures students read texts from the Flemish Canon, watch videos and prepare questions. Their knowledge and historical understanding is tested by means of a written exam at the end of the semester.
