Course objectives

The course will introduce concepts and theories of youth subcultures in the context of psychology, pedagogy, and sociology. It will also cover selected youth subcultures, their characteristics, subcultural style, and their relationships to musical genres, violence, and politics. The development of selected subcultures in the Czech Republic will also be considered. The course thus serves not only to theoretically grasp the study of subcultures but also to better understand the various subcultures that students may commonly encounter (not only) in pedagogical practice.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to: Explain theories of youth subcultures;

Describe approaches to researching youth subcultures;

Characterize selected youth subculture groups.

• Introductory Informational Meeting, Presentation of Topics; Basic Concepts (Culture, Subculture, Subcultural Style, Youth Subcultures, Adolescence);
  Theories of Youth Subcultures (Subcultural and Post-Subcultural Theories, Typologies of Youth Subcultures, Gender Aspects, Media, Politics);
  Approaches to Research on Youth Subcultures; Psychological and Pedagogical Dimensions of Subcultures; Riskiness of Youth Subcultures;
  Youth Subcultures during Socialism and Post-Socialism; Contextualization of the Czech Environment with Regard to Local and Global Trends; Czech Subcultures and Violence;
  Hippies (Values, Norms, History, Classification);
  Football Hooliganism (Values, Norms, History, Classification);
  Skinheads (Values, Norms, History, Classification);
  Punk and Hardcore (Values, Norms, History, Classification);
  Metal (Values, Norms, History, Classification);
  Gothic and Emo (Values, Norms, History, Classification);
