Course objectives
This course aims to introduce students to both the theoretical and practical dimensions of qualitative research methodology and how it can be applied within the field of education. The course begins with an overview of the theoretical foundations of the qualitative research paradigm. Following that, the process of conducting qualitative research is thoroughly explained step by step. Students engage in both individual and group work throughout the course. They are tasked with completing four individual assignments and four group projects, which are assessed continuously. Each group selects a research question to explore and develops a practice research project around it. The course concludes with the submission of a research report and its defense at a final mini-conference held during the exam period.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to: (1) Understand the philosophical foundations of qualitative research. (2) Identify a research problem suitable for qualitative research. (3) Correctly formulate a research question appropriate for qualitative inquiry. (4) Adequately plan a research design. (5) Create a framework for a semi-structured in-depth interview and conduct the interview accordingly. (6) Apply basic analytical techniques: open coding, categorization, and developing an analytical narrative. (7) Interpret interview data. (8) Write a research report summarizing their own research study and its findings.

  • 2. Planning a qualitative research project – research question, sample, field entry, data collection, analysis.
  • 3. Creating a qualitative research project.
  • 4. Data collection techniques. Verbal and visual data. Creating a semi-structured interview framework.
  • 5. The in-depth interview as a research tool: principles of conducting interviews.
  • 6. Qualitative data analysis – open coding.
  • 7. Qualitative data analysis – open coding and categorization.
  • 8. Qualitative data analysis – creating the structure of an analytical narrative.
  • 9. Qualitative research design: biography, grounded theory, ethnography, case study.
  • 10. Qualitative data analysis – formulation of findings, constant comparison, interpretation.
  • 11. Writing a research report. Structure and form of the text. Core claims.
  • 12. Writing a research report. Data interpretation.
  • 13. Writing a research report. Individual and team consultations with instructors.

Teaching methods
Lecture, seminar, discussion with students, group work, literature study.
Assessment methods
For successful completion of the course, students must fulfill the following criteria: 1. Attend seminars (with a maximum of two absences permitted); 2. Complete 4 individual assignments and 4 group projects; 3. Submit a group research report; and 4. Defend the report at a student mini-conference held during the exam period.
