Prerequisites
SOUHLAS
1. Do you want to understand deeper the ancient philosophy? And simultaneously to gain easier the credit (and possibly the better grade) in History of Philosophy I? Then enrol in this seminary! But it presupposes that you would be willing to read carefully the given ancient philosophical texts and to discuss them.

2. The course is open above all for:
a) students of the first class,
b) students of the second class which want to share their experiences and thus help the younger students.

3. Also the students of the third class are welcome.

Course objectives
To study ancient sources and to discuss deeper their philosophical content. Also to familiarize with basics of the methodology of the study of ancient sources.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course, students should be able to:
- interpret ancient philosophical sources;
- explain main problems from the ancient philosophy.

  • Discussions on source texts to following topics according to progress of lectures in the course History of Philosophy I:
  • 1. The sayings of "the Seven Sages".
  • 2. The fragments of th Milesians.
  • 3. The fragments of th Pythagoreans.
  • 4. Heraclitus' B fragments.
  • 5. The Eleatics and their fragments.
  • 6. Fragments to posteleatic systems.
  • 7. The texts to Sophists and their educational activity.
  • 8. Apology of Socrates and Euthyphro.
  • 9a. Plato's psychology - fragments from Phaedo and The Republic.
  • 9b. Platos's theory of Forms - fragments from Phaedo, Parmenides and Aristotle's The Metaphysics.
  • 10a. Aristotle's system of knowledge - fragments from The Metaphysics and Nicomachean Ethics.
  • 10b. Aristotle's ontology - fragments from The Metaphysics.

Teaching methods
Reading of relevant texts; on-line tests; discussions.
Assessment methods
1. Active participation in seminars.
In the case of only passive participation on a lesson you will obtain 1 p., when you will join to the discussion on the ground of your reading of the obligatory source you will obtain 2 p. You should collect at least 75 % of possible points in order to gain credits.

2. Before every lesson you have to fulfill an autotest in the ELF (https://elf.phil.muni.cz/24-25/). You have to gain at least 50 % of possible points in total from all the tests.

Alternate tasks for COMBINED STUDENTS:
If it is not possible for you to participate on lectures, you can still gain credits if you fulfill all on-line tasks for the full-time students and in addition you have to fulfill special set of "combined tests", gaining at least 75 % points in each of them replaces the participation at the relevant class. More details about the questions in ELF.
