Course objectives
The aim of the course is to deepen students' knowledge and skills in translating literary texts, particularly plays. Students will analyze the challenges of literary translation and learn techniques for translating literary elements (such as style, rhythm, and character portrayal) as precisely and creatively as possible. By the end of the course, students will complete a translation of a selected play and prepare a critical reflection on their work.
Learning outcomes
Ability to analyze and critically interpret literary texts in German. Mastery of basic and advanced translation techniques in literary translation. Ability to translate complex literary elements such as style, rhythm, dialogue, and character portrayal. Ability to reflect on one's translation and discuss translation decisions. Completion of a translation of a selected play and its defense.
