Prerequisites
Prerequisites and follow-ups:
The course assumes knowledge of psychology of personality and other basic fields of psychology, clinical psychology, and also largely draws on the field of psychological assessment. The course is followed up by further courses, e.g. Special Psychotherapy, Dance Therapy, Imagery Therapy, Self-Exploration, etc.

Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be informed about both the general concepts of psychotherapy and different systematic psychotherapeutic approaches.
The course also involves an overview and critical discussion of recent psychotherapeutic literature. Students will also obtain some general hands-on experience with conducting psychotherapeutic sessions.
Instruction consists of lectures and seminars (workshops). While the lectures are designed provide knowledge of general principles and schools of psychotherapy, seminars are focused on specific applications and considerations.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students are able to:
- Provide an overview of key concepts and approaches in the area of psychotherapy of adults;
- Incorporate hands-on experience (i.e. practical classroom exercises in seminars) and teachers' experience from psychotherapeutic practice (i.e. presented case histories) in their knowledge of psychotherapy;
- Distinguish between general concepts and approaches and specific implementations and considerations in psychotherapy.

  • Historical overview of psychotherapy,
  • Ethical issues in psychotherapy;
  • Education in psychotherapy; the standing of psychotherapy in organizational structure of professional societies;
  • Systematic overview of approaches, schools, and movements;
  • Psychoanalysis and analytical psychotherapy (Freud, Jung, Adler);
  • Current approaches based on psychoanalysis;
  • Dynamic and communication psychotherapy;
  • Rogerian therapy;
  • Humanistic psychotherapy;
  • Behavioural therapy;
  • Approaches in group psychotherapy;
  • Psychotherapeutic community - principles and procedures;
  • Overview of psychotherapeutic techniques;
  • Techniques of rational psychotherapy;
  • Hypnosis and suggestion;
  • Relaxation and imagery-based techniques;
  • Learning approaches and systematic desensitization;
  • Abreactiion techniques and pharmacological psychotherapy;
  • Empathy- and insight-based techniques;
  • Group dynamics of therapy groups; the role of the therapist in the group;
  • Course and focus of group sessions;
  • Non-verbal techniques, psychodrama, art therapy, music therapy, choreotherapy, etc.
  • Family therapy;
  • Psychotherapy of clients with psychotic disorders;
  • Psychotherapy of drug addicts;
  • Psychotherapy in selected areas of medicine;
  • Research in psychotherapy.
  • Apart from studying the required literature, students are required to watch the videos included in the course materials in the IS.

Teaching methods
Instruction involves two hours of lecture and two hours of seminar every other week.
Assessment methods
The course is completed with an exam. Psychotherapy is also one of the subjects included in Clinical Psychology specialization of the Master's State Exam.
Students are required to complete 80% attendance at seminars, obtain min. 75 % points in the credit test, and pass the oral exam (ca. 15 minutes).
