- Course objectives
- At the end of course, the students will have basic knowledge of different types of scientific texts in psychology and will be able to distinguish between primary, secondary and tertiary information, know what purpose they serve and how to work with them, use them in their own texts and cite them according to appropriate citation norms. They will also learn to work with electronic databases, find sources for literature reviews based on titles or key words, and find effective ways and cues for database search. In addition, students will learn about the basic structure of scientific publications and the contents as well as language of individual chapters of published empirical studies. They will demonstrate a critical approach to the use of and translated scientific terms, and to the formulation of statements and questions in scientific psychological contexts. Students will also learn about the structure, language and formal aspects of final theses and research proposals.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of course, the students will:
- Have basic knowledge of different types of scientific texts in psychology
- Distinguish between primary, secondary and tertiary information, know what purpose they serve and how to work with them and use them in their own texts;
- Cite different types of sources correstly according to the APA citation standard;
- Work with electronic databases on an advanced level, be able to find sources for literature reviews based on titles or key words, and find effective ways and cues for database search;
- Understand the basic structure of scientific publications and elements typically found in the contents as well as language of individual chapters of published empirical studies;
- Demonstrate a critical approach in the use of original and translated scientific terms;
- Demonstrate a critical approach in the formulation of statements and questions in scientific psychological contexts;
- Be familiar with the structure, language and formal aspects of final theses and research proposals. - Syllabus
- Topic covered in lectures:
- 1. Heuristics of psychological terminology: dictionaries; lexicons; terminological norms; encyclopaedias; terminology associated with psychological tests and instruments; multilingual psychological dictionaries. Overview of important Czech and international publishers, psychological journals and other periodicals. Copyright. Structure of journal articles.
- 2. Basic psychological terminology. Concepts, terms and constructs.
- 3. The process of creating statements. Semantic and pragmatic aspects of questions. Types of questions in psychological projects and texts.
- 4. Terminology of basic variables. Indicators and quantifiers in psychological texts.
- 5. The structure of a minor report and a Master’s thesis. Crediting sources and creating a subject index.
- 6. Structure of an electronic database of scientific literature. Examples of descriptors. Psychological information of the internet. Overview of local library services.
