- Course objectives
- The course is designed for master students of psychology with an interest in psychotherapy. During this course, students will be acquainted with the work of Milton H. Erickson and therapists who have drawn inspiration from Erickson's work. Students will be able to think critically about the possibilities and limits of Erickson-inspired therapy and the use of hypnosis and trance in therapeutic practice. The course is practically oriented and students will learn some of the basic procedures of induction of trance and they will also learn the basics of a therapeutic interview (e.g. according to solution-focused therapy…)
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be acquainted with the work of Milton H. Erickson and his disciples (Zeig, Rossi, O'Hanlon) and other therapists (Haley, McNeilly, de Shazer, Berg, Watzlawick…) who were inspired by Erickson's work.
At the end of this course, student will be able:
- to express the possibilities and limits of Erickson-inspired therapy and hypnotherapy;
- have an idea of what they might want to include in their therapeutic thinking and future therapeutic practice;
- student will have theoretical knowledge and practical experience with basic procedures of induction of trance and with therapeutic interview within the given theoretical perspective (e.g. according to solution focused therapy). - Syllabus
- Milton Hyland Erickson - life story, shaping life experiences and connections with hypnosis, Erickson's invention in hypnotherapy and psychotherapy.
- The use of hypnosis in therapeutic practice - myths and prejudices, hypnotic phenomena, differences between classical and ericksonian hypnotherapy, language of hypnosis, basics of trance induction. Hypnosis in the concept of Erickson's disciples (Zeig, Rossi, Bandler, Grinder, O'Hanlon, McNeilly).
- Erickson's strategic interventions and Jay Haley strategic therapy.
- Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto (Watzlawick, Jackson, Bavelas).
- Short solution-focused therapy (Berg, de Shazer, Miller) - basic principles, training.
- Other therapeutic approaches classified to therapeutical postmodernism building on Erickson's ideas.

- Theoretical explanation, discussion, practical training in groups. Active participation in discussions and practical exercises is expected.

- For successful completion of the course is required attendance (maximum 2 absences possible) and active access to discussions and practical exercises. Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes: Course-unit credit is awarded on the basis of 1) above mentioned conditions and 2) submission of essay on the work of Milton H. Erickson or therapists who drew inspiration from him and about possibilities and limits of their therapeutic approach. Part of the essay will also be a reflection of the course trainee about usefulness or uselessness for his / her own thinking about therapeutic work and practice (scope 2 NS).
