- Course objectives
- The series of lectures and seminars offers students a basic overview of the development of Latin script during Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, i.e. from 7 BC to 8 AD. Students should master these skills: a) the typology and dating of Latin scripts, b) the palaeographic characteristics of individual script types, c) palaeographic analysis and comparison, d) transcription of Ancient and Early Medieval Latin texts, e) an overview of the basic literature on Latin script during Antiquity and the Early Medieval period, and Latin papyrology, including the main editions.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
- apply their knowledge of the development of script from 7 BC until 8 AD based on specific sources, particularly for dating undated texts;
- to transcribe original Latin texts from Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages;
- to analyse and read original Latin texts from Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. - Syllabus
