- Course objectives
- The course offers a systematic overview of the basic phenomena of Modern Greek phonology, morphology and syntax. Students must be able to describe these and apply these when speaking and writing in Modern Greek. Another aim of the course is to enable students to understand more difficult Modern Greek texts and to translate texts from Modern Greek into Czech and vice versa. The main aim of the course is to make students familiar with basic grammatical phenomena of Modern Greek language (CEFR B1).
- Learning outcomes
- At the and of the course, student will reach the level CEFR B1 and:
- will be able to connect the discussed grammatical phenomena and the new vocabulary with the known and aply them in spoken and written Modern Greek;
- will be able to understand Modern Greek texts of appropriate level (B1), to interpret them and translate from Modern Greek into Czech and short simple texts from Czech into Modern Greek;
- will have mastered basic Modern Greek language linguistic terminology;
- will be capable of explaining grammatical phenomena they were taught. - Syllabus
- Grammar: Basics of Modern Greek Language, lessons 28-38: verbs passive – a detailed survey, perfect passive participle, irregular verbs, irregular substantives, reflexive pronouns, relative pronouns, deponent verbs, reflexive verbs, concessive clauses, declarative clauses, time clauses, clauses of reason, content clauses expressing fear, interrogative clauses, reported speech, sequence of tenses, punctuation, weights and measurements, arithmetic operations, idiomatic usage of certain conjunctions and particles.

- Teaching methods
- The course has a form of a seminar and lectures. Homework is required during semester – students prepare assigned grammatical exercises and short translations from Modern Greek into Czech and vice versa.
- Assessment methods
- Requirements for obtaining the credit: preparation of assignments within the deadline, passing a credit written test (min. 75%) and at least 70% participation in lessons. Final written exam lasts 90 minutes and contains a translation from Czech to Greek and vice versa, filling in the correct form of various parts of speech in sentences and interpretation of grammatical phenomena.
