- Course objectives
- The course brings an overview of the historical development of the Anabaptist movement from its beginnings in the 16th century until contemporary situation. Attention is paid mainly to the situation in the 16th century Moravia with a respect to the problems of social group dynamics and leadership. Following lectures are dedicated to further development of the Hutterites during the period of their migration to Transylvania, Russia and finally to USA and Canada.
- Learning outcomes
- After succesfull finishing of the course the students will be able: - to understand the beginning of Anabaptis movement in Europe with regard to its social, economical and political aspects; - to demonstrate basic knowledge about history of Anabaptism; - to critically use sources to the history of Anabaptism in Moravia; - to critically reflect modern scholarly concepts about Anabaptism in the Early Modern era.
- Syllabus
- (0) Introduction to the course, graduation requirements, literature. (1) The Reformation and the beginnings of Anabaptism in the context of contemporary scholarship. (2) Persecution of Anabaptists and the spread of Anabaptism. (3) Religious conditions in Moravia in the 16th century. (4) Anabaptists, the king, and the nobility in Moravia in the 16th and 17th centuries. (5) Differentiation of anabaptism and intergroup dynamics. (6) The faith, ritual, and festivals of the Anabaptists. (7) The fate of the Anabaptists in Central Europe after the battle at Bílá Hora. (8) Migration or acculturation - Anabaptists between Europe and North America. (9) Huterites in the US and Canada in the 20th century - the challenges of pacifism. (10) Huterites in USA and Canada - problems and challenges of the present. (11) The image of Anabaptists in the culture of the majority society. (12) Concluding discussion. - Assessment methods
- Terms of the colloquium:
a) Presentation of the paper and submission of its written form. This task is scored with a maximum of 30 points, of which 15 points are for presentation and 15 points for the written assignment. A total of at least 18 points is required for this task. b) Oral colloquium - presentation of short information on a pre-selected topic, max. 20 points, min. 12 points. c) Test - max. 50 points, the required limit is 60% of questions answered correctly i.e. 30 points. - Language of instruction
