Course objectives
The primary aim of the course is to extend and deepen linguistic competencies in normative Attic Greek grammar. In the domain of morphology, students learn dual number and numerals, special attention is dedicated to all types of athematic verbs and the summarization of all stem types of the Greek verbal system. In the domain of syntax, students learn special types of infinitive and participial constructions and temporal clauses. Following the successful completion of the course, students will be able to identify and use the aforementioned grammatical phenomena and vocabulary from the Lexis textbook during both active and passive translation of texts written in Attic Greek.
Learning outcomes
Following the successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the entire morphological system of the Attic dialect of Ancient Greek;
- explain and use various infinitive and participial constructions;
- identify and actively form irregular and athematic Greek verbs;
- discern in the Greek text most types of subordinate clauses;
- translate a wider range of Greek texts thanks to improved vocabulary and newly obtained grammatical knowledge.

  • 1. Revision.
  • 2. Athematic verbs: didomi and its compounds (present and aorist system).
  • 3. Didomi: other tenses and moods.
  • 4. Tithemi and its compounds.
  • 5. Hiemi and its compounds.
  • 6. Histemi and its compounds; temporal clauses.
  • 7. Athematic verbs inflected according to histemi; conjugation of other athematic verbs.
  • 8. The verb eimi (ire).
  • 9. Verbs terminated with -n(n)ymi.
  • 10. Participle and infinitive. Indirect speech.
  • 11. Numerals.
  • 12.–13. Revision.

Assessment methods
The assessment method for the course is a written test that evaluates student's knowledge of normative Attic grammar. The maximum duration of the test is 90 minutes, and the pass mark is set at 70%.
