Course objectives
The subject introduces the course of Russian history focused on acquiring the knowledge about the Russian past necessary for further study of Russian culture and literature. The lectures have such form that students can acquire clearer understanding about Russian historical development, about singular historical periods of Russian state and the political system changes and about the Russian and the European (world) history connections. In lectures the emphasis is put on the key events and figures of the Russian history from oldest times until 1985. The exam requires managing with great deal of factual information and necessity of regular compulsory reading.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to determine and to characterize the key periods of Russian historical development;
- to put the Russian history into broader context of the European and the world history;
- to identify the main events of the Russian history and to interpret it in chronological sequence;
- to determine the significance of these events for the further historical development of Russia.

  • 1) The oldest history of Russia (Kiev, Novgorod, Vladimir)
  • 2) Rus’ under the dominance of Golden Horde
  • 3) Moscovy Rus in the 16th and 17th centuries
  • 4) Russia in the 18th century
  • 5) Russia in the 19th century
  • 6) Russia under the reign of Nicolas II (on the way to revolution)
  • 7) Revolutions, formation of the USSR
  • 8) The World War II, Soviet Union in poststalin epoch
